Everything you need to know about the service we deliver
Does a heat pump require a hot water cylinder?
Yes, you need a hot water cylinder as part of your air source heat pump installation. The hot water cylinder you would need for an average three-bedroom property is the size of a fridge-freezer appliance. Larger properties with more people living in them require larger hot water cylinders.
Hot water cylinders should be installed in a utility space or somewhere warm so they lose less heat and require less energy to heat and keep warm. You will be able to discuss the exact positioning and size of your hot water cylinder at the on-site survey stage with the installer.
Do heat pumps work in cold weather?
Yes, heat pumps work efficiently in the UK climate, even during colder months. They are designed to operate effectively in temperatures as low as -20°C. In fact, heat pumps are widely used in colder climates such as Norway, Sweden, and Finland, where winters are much harsher than in the UK. These countries have seen over 40% of households adopt heat pump technology due to its reliability and efficiency in maintaining comfortable indoor temperatures, even in extreme cold.
Are heat pumps noisy?
Heat pumps operate between 40 - 60 decibels which is similar to the sound levels made by a fridge. Because they operate outside, there are strict rules on the noise heat pumps are allowed to produce.
Heat pumps will make slightly more noise when they are heating the home to higher temperatures and using more energy or when they are on a defrost cycle, but this is typically only when the outdoor temperature drops below 4°C.
