Installation Process

Installation Process

Before the Installation

Before installation, your selected contractor will inspect your home to make sure it's ready for the installation. They will check things like your heating and cooling needs, the floor plan, the electrical system, and examine your outdoor space. The contractor is there to understand your goals and help determine a sizing approach based on these goals. The contractor will help you select a heat pump system that meets your home’s heating and/or cooling needs. Sizing the system correctly is extremely important for the heat pump to operate most efficiently and effectively. Your contractor will provide the technical evaluation to “right size” your system and recommendation.

The Installation

Installer Arrival

Installers will arrive and review the job plan associated with your Switch Together personal offer. Installers will confirm locations of the indoor unit (air handler), outdoor unit (condenser), and any ductwork or electrical updates.

Protecting your home

  • Floors coverings may be laid and tools organized.
  • Access paths to work areas are prepared to minimize disruption.

Removal of old equipment (if replacing)

The existing furnace or AC unit will be safely disconnected and removed by the certified contractor, ensuring all work is completed in compliance with safety and legal requirements.

Indoor Air Handler Installation

A central air handler is installed in the designated space (e.g., basement, attic or utility room). It is then integrated into your existing ductwork to distribute both heating and cooling efficiently.

Outdoor Unit Installation

  • The outdoor unit will be installed in an area with ample airflow and minimal obstructions. For example, an area sheltered from wind and snow accumulation.
  • The contractor will connect the indoor and outdoor units using refrigerant lines and electrical wires.

Electrical and Thermostat Setup

A licensed electrician may need to update your electrical panel or circuits to support the heat pump. Also, a smart or programmable thermostat will be installed and connected to the system.

Final checks

The contractor will ensure that your new cold climate heat pump is functioning correctly and is ready to use. The system is powered on to conduct a pressure test.

Maintaining your Heat Pump

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, you should have a professional technician service your heat pump at least once a year.

The technician can verify several things including:

  • Adequate airflow
  • Correct refrigerant charge by measurement
  • Correct thermostat operation
  • Correct electric control

Heat Pump Self Maintenance

There are also several things you can do yourself to better maintain your heat pump. These include:

  1. Regularly Clean or Replace Air Filters:

Clean or change filters every 1-3 months or as recommended by the contractor. Filters that are clogged restrict airflow that could reduce the overall efficiency of the heat pump.

  2. Keep Outdoor Unit Clear:

The outdoor unit can sometimes accumulate dirt, leaves and even snow depending on your location. Ensure that your heat pump’s outdoor unit remains clear for optimal airflow.

  3. Clean Outdoor Coils:

Periodically clean the outdoor coils of your heat pump, as they can accumulate dirt and dust over time. Always ensure the system is powered off before cleaning. For best results, use a garden hose with a gentle spray or a soft cloth, as recommended by industry experts.

There are many other tips available online provided by the U.S. Department of Energy that you can consider for further heat pump self maintenance.
